What is Cellulite?

What is Cellulite and How did You Get it?

what is cellulite

If you happen to be a woman over the age of 30, the odds are extremely high that you have cellulite somewhere on your body and you’re probably wanting to know “Exactly what is Cellulite and how am I going to get rid of it?”.

It could be that it came on slowly and gradually took over and then when you realized what was happening, it was too late – your lower body was covered with cottage cheese!  Let’s be honest – it’s not pretty.  It’s embarrassing.  It’s ugly and it’s hard to get rid of once it’s taken over.  But don’t give up yet.  Let’s look at the answer to “what is cellulite” and why we get it.  Then we can talk about how to get rid of it.

What is Cellulite?

There’s a lot of technical mumbo jumbo that pops up in answer to the question “what is cellulite”?   Many people will say that’s it’s simply fat, along with water, just beneath the skin.  But the truth is that  Cellulite is a condition that causes the skin to appear dimpled, much like “cottage cheese” or “orange peel”.  Cellulite is a combination of fat and  the connective tissue that it’s trapped in.  Most women find this condition on their lower extremities – buttocks, thighs and hips, but it can find its way to other places like your stomach and arms.  It’s not that picky where it lives.  It’s also a condition that affects both thin and overweight people.  We most often think of women when we talk about cellulite but men can get it, too.

Cellulite can be caused by many factors including:

  • Weight gain
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Bad Eating Habits
  • Sedentary lifestyle

If you’ve gained weight, you probably saw an increase in cellulite to go along with it.  Weight gain is typically caused by poor eating habits – either choosing the wrong foods or eating too much in general.  Cut back on the foods containing sugar and fat.  These are major contributors to cellulite.  Instead, eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.  Stay away from the fast food drive thru.

A sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise) can cause you to get cellulite – especially on the back of the thighs and butt.  Starting an exercise program is a great step towards reducing cellulite.  It’s also a very effective way to eliminate toxins from your body, not to mention that it firms things up that otherwise are a little flabby.

Drinking water – lots of it – will also help to flush those unwanted toxins from your body.  Try changing out those sodas for water and you will be amazed at the changes in your body.  Your body is mostly composed of water and it needs lots of water to operate at a high efficiency.  Your body cannot flush unwanted toxins out of your body without adequate water.  Drink it – it’s good for you!

Some of the other things are beyond our control such as genetics and hormonal changes.  The best advice I can give you is to not let it get you down.  You will have to work at getting rid of the cellulite but it can be done.

How Do You Get Rid of Cellulite?

If you’re satisfied that now you know the answer to “what is cellulite“, then it’s time to figure out how to get rid of it.  As I mentioned above, diet and exercise are a HUGE part in getting rid of it.  These are things you can begin immediately that don’t cost a penny.  In fact, you’ll probably see that you’re saving money by eating better.  Fast food is not cheap!

You can also look into various spa treatments or doctor office treatments to help reduce cellulite.  These types of treatments typically cost a good deal of money and require repeated treatments.  After you achieve the desired results, you’ll probably have to have maintenance treatments as well.

If you don’t have $1000′s to spend on cellulite treatments, you can look into some of the OTC creams and lotions that are available.  Take a look at the review of the top 5 cellulite products:  Cellulite Cream Reviews.  Those products range from cheap to “not so cheap” but all are under $100.  It’s something you can do at home in just a few minutes each day.  Check it out.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The longer you let the cellulite remain on your body, the harder it will be to get rid of it.  If you act quickly, it’s much more likely that you’ll be able to get rid of it.

Cellulite Removal

The Secret to Cellulite Removal

cellulite removalThere are a lot of people who think there is a magic bullet for cellulite removal.  There isn’t.  It’s a multi-step approach that will get you the best and fastest results that will last.

The steps to successful cellulite removal are:

1.  Diet Changes

2.  Exercise

3.  Various products that can help speed the process up

Steps for Cellulite Removal

Let’s look at each of these areas individually:

1.  Diet changes are necessary because in all likelihood, your diet has contributed over time to your cellulite problem.  This, along with other things including lack of exercise (which we’ll cover next), smoking and drinking are the main factors behind our cellulite problems.  Yes, all the “good stuff” causes that cottage cheese to accumulate on your butt and thighs!  You don’t have to change  everything overnight but you can start slowly by drinking more water and eating less junk food and less fast food.  Water will help flush the cellulite from your body and it will help your body function so much better in many different ways.  It’s vital to your overall health.

Sweets and fast foods are full of sugar and fat, both of which are counterproductive if you’re trying to reduce cellulite.  Cigarette smoking and alcohol are toxins that get trapped in your body and rob it of it’s youthful appearance.

Introduce more fresh vegetables and fruits into your diet.  Someone once told me that when I go to the grocery store to shop along the perimeter of the store and stay away from the shelves in the middle.  That way, you’ll get “real” food – that’s where the meats, the vegetables, fruit and dairy products are.

2.  Get off your bum!  Cellulite removal involves moving your body.  You’ll be very surprised just how far a little exercise will go in reducing cellulite.  We’re not talking about running marathons or becoming a professional athlete, we’re talking about starting with a walking routine.  Walk around the neighborhood.  Start slow and then go faster as you’re able.  Do what you can and try to increase it in time.

3.  Products to help the process along.  There are a ton of products that are advertised as cellulite removal products.  Some of them are available at day spas, some at the doctor’s office and others are available online and in stores.  I personally have never known anyone to have long term success with the procedures at the day spa or doctor’s office, though there may be some methods that are very effective.  What I do know is that these type of procedures are typically very expensive and can cost into the $1000′s because of the amount of visits required to achieve results and then for maintenance.

Over the past few years, some of the top manufacturers have come out with some cellulite removal creams that actually work.  We’ve looked at the top 5 and have done a comparison that you can read here: Cellulite Cream Reviews.  All of these products are available for under $100.

These creams should be used in conjunction with the changes I’ve outlined above which include cleaning up your diet and beginning an exercise routine.  Only when you stop feeding the cellulite will you accomplish true cellulite removal.

How to Get Rid of Cellulite

How to get rid of cellulite

So You Don’t Know How to Get Rid of Cellulite?

If you’re a woman over the age of 30, chances are high that you’ve become concerned about that cottage cheese skin on your thighs and butt because you don’t know how to get rid of cellulite.

Cellulite is embarrassing.  You may find you don’t want to wear shorts or a swim suit.  You probably don’t want anyone seeing you naked either.  That’s understandable.  But don’t worry too much about it because it is treatable.  And just because you don’t know how to get rid of cellulite doesn’t mean it can’t be done!

Drink Water! There are a lot of things that you can do on a daily basis to help reduce your cellulite.  The most important thing to do first is to start drinking more water.  Water flushes toxins from your body – and cellulite is actually built up toxins embedded in fat just beneath the skin.  That may be simplifying it a bit but that’s basically what it is.  This is a first step in getting rid of that dreaded cellulite.

Clean up your diet!  Another thing you can do is to start watching what you eat.  Yes, all that fast food is full of bad stuff that just adds to the cellulite that’s trying to take over your body.  You’ll need to cut back on fatty foods and sweets.  Simply doing that will probably cause you to lose weight which may also improve the appearance of the cellulite.

Replace those bad foods with plenty of fruits and vegetables.  They’re lower in calories so you can actually quite a bit of them – you can even use them as great in-between meal snacks.

Eating 4-5 small meals throughout the day will keep your metabolism up and will help you to burn additional calories.  It’s much better to eat several smaller meals than it is to pack it all in during one big meal.

Cutting back on alcohol may not be the news you’d like to hear but it will certainly help this process.  Same goes for smoking.

Get off the couch!  That’s right – get off your bum.  Get moving.  Exercising will strengthen the connective tissue in the body, which also happens to reduce cellulite.  It doesn’t matter if you don’t exercise, you can start out slow.  Start walking – you can start at a normal pace at first but then begin to quicken that pace.  Exercise gets everything moving – including getting those toxins out of your body.  This is one of the most important steps in how to get rid of cellulite.

If you’re more advanced, you can run, bike, lift weights, jump rope, etc.  Just do something to get your heart rate up.  If you’re not used to exercising, be sure to check with your doctor first to make sure it’s ok.

Not everyone who gets cellulite is overweight.  Skinny people get it, too, and they also want to know how to get rid of cellulite.  That’s where a little outside help may come in handy such as Cellulite treatment creams.

Best Cellulite Cream

I think that a lot of us “of a certain age” are used to the old products that were touted as miracle cures for cellulite.  Those products were pure bunk and did nothing to get rid of cellulite.  The newer products can actually help.  While there is still no overnight cure for cellulite, it’s nice to hurry up the process with a good product.

The younger women have the advantage of having products that actually work while they’re young instead of having to clean up the problem when they get older.  They may not see that as an advantage right not, especially if they have cellulite – but I wish I’d had these products 20 years ago.

Of course the best cellulite cream is only as good as you let it be.  You have to be diligent and use it every day as directed.  You’ll also see much better and faster results if you take some of our other advice on this site and clean up your diet and begin an exercise program.

That may not be the answer you’re looking for, but it’s an honest one.  That’s what we’ve found to work best – improve your diet, exercise and use one of the top cellulite creams to help speed up the process.

Take a look at what we’ve uncovered with the top products and see if any of these may work for you.  You have your choice, but we still think that Revitol is the best cellulite cream on the market.
