One of the most common questions I get each day is “Can a Cellulite Treatment Cream Really Work?” The answer may pleasantly surprise you!
As you may (or may not) remember, the word Cellulite first entered our pop culture vocabulary in the 1970’s. At the time, American doctors stubbornly claimed it was just a figment of our imaginations, while French doctors were hard at work to combat it. So nearly 40 years later, here we are – surrendered to the fact that just as statistics predict, most women (an estimated 80-90%) will eventually be affected by cellulite. While it’s not considered a serious medical condition, cellulite can be very unsightly, and can make you self-conscious enough to not want to wear shorts or a swimming suit. Depressing, huh?
So Exactly What is Cellulite?
Cellulite consists of enlarged fatty deposits just underneath the skin that cause the surface of your skin to look lumpy and dimpled, much like cottage cheese. These fatty deposits accumulate because of trapped toxins that have not been eliminated by the body. This “orange peel” effect is most commonly found on the thighs, hips, buttocks, arms and lower stomach. Cellulite affects all body types – normal, slim or large.
What Causes Cellulite?
The main reasons for the formation of cellulite are: genetic predisposition, weight gain, hormonal changes, sedentary lifestyle, high-fat, low-fiber diet and alcohol consumption. These factors can cause the fat cells located in the subcutaneous fat layers to expand up to 300 times their normal size and bond together inside their enclosed pockets. While the fat pocket is stretched upward, the fibers in between the fat pockets become strained, circulation becomes inhibited, trapping toxins and water, and resulting in cellulite.
Is there a Cure for Cellulite?
While it widely believe that there is no true “cure” for cellulite, there have been many advancements to reduce the appearance of it. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, Liposuction was the hottest fix for the condition but it is very expensive and can be dangerous at times. It also does not totally eliminate cellulite.
Then mesotherapy appeared in this country. A combination of enzymes, medicines and herbal preparations were injected directly into the mesoderm (middle cell layer where cellulite resides). Some of the drugs used included asthma drugs, vasodilators and anti-inflammatory drugs and the procedure is very expensive and unregulated. Since then, there have been many spa type treatments that are very expensive – some working better than others.
Despite all these “procedures” and “treatments”, there remained a need for non-invasive alternatives and home-care products to help fight cellulite. That’s where all the anti-cellulite creams came into play.
Cellulite treatment creams and lotions are by far the most popular of all treatment methods and are considered as being one of the least extreme. These creams are much less expensive than any of the surgical procedures and spa treatments, but do they really work?

Learning New Habits
As they say, old habits die hard, and we all know it to be the truth. If we want to reduce the appearance of cellulite, we have to make some changes in our every day lives. Some of the changes may seem drastic at first, but remember that you don’t have to make all the changes overnight.
First of all, it’s important to incorporate a cellulite friendly diet. It’s not as hard as it sounds, but there does have to be some thought given to the types of foods we ingest. Cutting back on junk foods, sugar, alcohol and fatty foods will be a great start.
Developing a daily exercise routi ne will help to minimize cellulite and will also assist in losing any extra weight that might be contributing to the problem. There is a definite connection between cellulite and circulation so anything you can do to improve your circulation will help. Get out there and get the blood pumping. It’ll improve your life in so many ways.
Quit smoking! That’s right, cellulite and smoking go hand in hand. Cigarette smoke contains toxins that get trapped in your body. It accelerates the breakdown of collagen which makes the skin age much more rapidly and makes the cellulite look worse. It also affects the body’s production of hyaluronic acid and that robs your skin of all its youthful appearance.
Cut down on alcohol consumption. Cellulite and alcohol are yet another perfect match. Alcohol is a toxin. It increases fat levels in blood, slows down circulation and bogs down the waste removal organs. It also inhibits the absorption of Vitamin C, Calcium and Zinc (known fat burners) when consumed in high quantities.
I know it seems like a lot of changes, but you can start slowly and change one thing at a time. This, in combination with a good cellulite treatment cream should do the trick!
